Dr. Joseph Mwaka is a humanitarian medical doctor and global health researcher with expertise in clinical trial management, infectious disease surveillance, and public health program implementation across Africa, Asia, and Europe. With a strong focus on evidence-based interventions and leveraging data for improved healthcare outcomes, Dr. Mwaka has led pivotal initiatives, including genomic surveillance projects, multi-country public health programs, and neglected tropical disease research.
Currently serving as a Research Development Officer at the Mildmay Research Centre Uganda, Dr. Mwaka is at the forefront of fostering collaborations with funders and research institutions, managing research projects, and developing grant proposals. Previous roles include Research Scientist on visceral leishmaniasis in Bangladesh, Afox Fellow for wastewater genomic surveillance across three African countries, and Medical Officer overseeing HIV/TB programs for refugees in Uganda.
An alumnus of the University of Oxford with an MSc in International Health & Tropical Medicine and a certified clinical trials professional, Dr. Mwaka is committed to advancing implementation research to bridge the gap between evidence and practice, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
An avid speaker of Kiswahili and Luo, Joseph enjoys long walks and travelling.
